Federal regulators on Friday released a draft review of the environmental impact of the proposed NEXUS natural gas pipeline.
The 1,498-page document is available on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission website and will be distributed locally to the Stark County District Library, Stark County commissioners, the city of Green and the trustees of Nimishillen, Washington, Lake, Marlboro, Pike and Bethlehem townships.
Spectra Energy and DTE Energy want to run their 36-inch-diameter NEXUS Gas Transmission project through Washington, Nimishillen, Marlboro and Lake townships and the city of Green.
The $2 billion pipeline would carry up to 1.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas a day from the Utica and Marcellus shale region to markets in Ohio, Michigan and Canada.
Last month, a Spectra Energy project director said NEXUS plans to be in service in November 2017.
Building and operating the pipeline would cause some adverse impacts to the environment, but those could be reduced to less-than-significant levels by taking certain steps, FERC concluded in the review it conducted with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The city of Green has proposed moving NEXUS to southern Stark County. FERC said Green’s proposal would be an acceptable alternative and is asking landowners along the southern route to file comments.
The public can submit comments on the report by mail, online or in person at one of several public meetings. The deadline for comments is Aug. 29. The project’s FERC docket number is CP16-22-000.
A public meeting will be held 5 p.m., Aug. 18, at Green High School.
Also this week, Green officials announced they have made an online map that details the impact the proposed pipeline would have on the city. The map is available at http://bit.ly/GREEN2016.
